About

I’ve received a couple of emails that mentioned this page doesn’t really tell a lot about me or my cooking background. I hate to disappoint, but there’s really not much to tell. I guess it all starts with my love for eating, cooking, writing and computers – and in that order.
I grew up in central Wisconsin but moved to Orange County, California when I was twenty. I was in OC for seventeen years and absolutely loved it. I married Alan,
and within a few years we’d relocated to the East Coast. We were in Maryland for three years before moving to Virginia in December ‘08. I love Northern Virginia and am very happy to be here!
Our first child was born in August ‘04, followed by the second in July ‘06…
…two beautiful girls that we love with all our heart!
Before we had kids, I was the VP of Human Resources for a large restaurant chain based in Orange County. I resigned when I was 7 months pregnant with our first child and have never looked back. This did, however, mean a major lifestyle change that took some getting used to.
The biggest change, aside from the obvious no-longer-having-a-career-thing (which didn’t bother me in the least), was the fact that our DINK lifestyle (double income no kids) was now a SIWK lifestyle (you can figure that one out, I’m sure). Gone was my income, which meant no more eating out. No, really…not. at. all. EVER. And I can’t begin to tell you what angst this caused me.
You see, prior to this we ate out for every meal. This is no exaggeration when I say every meal. Breakfast, eat out. Lunch, eat out. And dinner? You guessed it. We ate out. And we ate at good restaurants, too. Our refrigerator looked like a single bachelor lived there, complete with ketchup bottle and the token can of beer. We were DINKS, to be sure.
I had to come to terms with the fact that my life as I knew it was over. I was excited about this new life, but it was foreign to me and I had absolutely no idea how to go about it. I had grown up with a wonderful mom who also happened to be a wonderful cook, and although I had tried my hand at baking cookies as a kid, I’d always left the cooking to her (and frankly had never been too interested in it). And now I was mourning the delicious food that I was sure was gone forever. I laughed out loud when I thought about what I might attempt to cook. That’s when it hit me…
I was going to have to teach myself to make the same kind of food I craved and loved.
As soon as I came to this realization, I knew what I had to do. So…out came the cookbooks, the internet, and of course…Food TV. Rachael Ray was my hero, as was Paula Deen, Bobby Flay and Ina Garten. I watched, obsessed, determined to learn from them. And I did. And I also made plenty of phone calls to Mom when things weren’t turning out quite right and I needed immediate advice on what to do (and yes, this happened a lot)!
I don’t watch Food TV very often anymore*, but I am still quite obsessive about searching the internet and scouring cooking magazines. I love to read and continuously learn about cooking; the science behind it fascinates me. But what I really love is just finding an easy, fun recipe that turns out amazing results and makes me look like a chef and not the cook that I am. And although we can afford to eat at nice restaurants again, I’ve found that cooking a nice meal for my family – and for friends – is so much fun that I often prefer to stay home.
So that’s how my cooking adventures began, and ultimately how I came to have a food blog. It’s a new project that just launched in February ‘09, and I hope you’ll stick around and help it become a success. You’ll find all types of recipes here, from healthy gourmet to fast and easy. Drop me a line if there’s something in particular you’d like to see or if you just want to say hello; one of my favorite things about writing this blog is checking out the comments and getting emails from readers. You can either sign the guestbook or send me an email at kristy@thewickednoodle.com.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
*I’ve resurrected my addiction for FoodTV again after a hiatus of a couple of years – it’s still great! Their new magazine is awesome, too!

I LOVE your blog. You are a true genius in the kitchen. Alan is a lucky guy. As I work and get home in the evening with very little time and energy, I cook most of the weekend and then warm up good dinners for the family on week days. Do you have any great recipes for slow cooker, oven based or “great when warmed up” food? If so, please share!!
Karen, you’re such a sweetheart! Thanks so much for your kind words! I do have a few slow cooker recipes; I’ll make a point to post a few in the next week or two. Do you have a preference in terms of spicy, kind of meat, etc? I completely understand about being tired at night. I love to cook, but leftover night is always nice!
Hi – I found you on Foodbuzz. I am trying to make a website dedicated to all Virginia Food Bloggers – I would love to have you. Send me an email if you would like to be listed – I’ll have more details as I get the site up and running!
Thanks!

Hi Susan! Your new blog sounds great; I’ll pop you an email shortly. Thanks for visiting!
Kristy,
I love your website and wish you much success. As a person who cooks the same things I would love to try your recipes. Thanks for the wisdom on cooking.
Shanda
Thanks, Shanda! So glad you stopped by!
Kristy – you wicked noodle! You did inherit your mom’s food genes! These recipes sound delicious. We’re DIWK’s, but pinching pennies …so no eating out for us any more either. Just don’t know which recipe I would try first! Take care!! And keep having fun with this!
Oh…my…gosh!!! What a blast from the past, Deb! I literally have tears in my eyes right now. I ADORED you when I was a kid, and have such great memories of Dena and Derek, too! Please give everyone my best! What a funny way to reconnect, but I’ll take it!
Hi Kristy. I really like your blog! It’s impressive, especially since you’ve only been going at it since January. And it appears I’m currently where you once lived — Orange County
Costa Mesa to be specific. I’m glad that you’re now happy in Virginia. Good luck with ALL! I’ll be back
Thanks,
Shelly

Hey Shelly! Thanks for the nice comments! Oh, how I miss Orange County! I lived in Costa Mesa, Newport, Huntington and Orange while I was there. I’m hoping to get back there to see my friends sometime this year. Have you eaten at Wahoo’s? That’s where I was the vp of HR…if you haven’t tried it, you really must! Have some blackened mushroom enchiladas for me!
Hey Kristy! I love your introduction. We are a DINK, but I would love to be a SIWK! As a teacher, at least I get summers. I am doing what you have done and figuring out how to feed my family all the things I LOVE without spending gobs of money! I do love your site and your pictures are wonderful!
Thanks,
Carrie

Hi kristy!
I love your web site and I’m sure I will learn a lot reading you. I’m disapointed because you won’t understand my blog, cause it’s writen in catalan (I’m from Barcelona), but I use to link some good pages in english.
Cheers from Catalonia!
Gemma…I used Goggle translator to read some of your beautiful blog, very nice! Thanks for visiting me – new foodie friends are always welcome
I wasn’t aware that you have your own blog site. It’s nice to see your blog and I’m glad I can keep in touch with you here.
Hi Kristy,
I just read your note on Refrigerator Soup. You were so nice in the interactions we had, I just wanted to say best of luck to you in your new endeavors! I can certainly understand your decision. The blogging and cooking, photography, etc. is really time consuming! Two blogs would be crazy, especially with younger children!
I look forward to following your blog here and seeing you on Twitter!
Gwen
@Divina – I never advertised that I had my own blog, I suppose because I wanted to keep some anonymity since Refrigerator Soup wasn’t about me…it was about everyone! SO glad you stopped by here though, and I’m glad we can keep in touch.
@bunkycooks – Thanks so much for your understanding! I was so afraid I was letting everyone down by leaving, but I know that Laura is going to do fantastic things with RS. I’m definitely going to follow both you and Divina and keep in touch!
