Blog for a Cause & Italian Sausage Sliders
A couple of months ago I flew to Milwaukee, WI to be part of Johnsonville Sausage’s Blog for a Cause event. Having worked with Johnsonville on several of their previous campaigns, I pretty much knew what to expect: a lot of pampering, wining and dining at the area’s top restaurants, and a great time hanging out with great people I’d begun to build a great working relationship with. But the best part of that event was their announcement that they were going to donate cold, hard cash to the local charity of my choice.
I knew right away the charity I’d choose. Although I’m a big supporter of Share Our Strength and have worked with them on campaigns in the past, there’s another local organization that I also wanted to call some attention to. It’s a non-profit called Homestretch, whose mission is to “empower homeless families with children under age 18 in Virginia to attain permanent housing and self-sufficiency by giving them the skills, knowledge and hope they need to become productive participants in the community“.
My sister Jolie worked for them until just recently and now sits on their board of directors. It’s a fabulous organization that teaches skills necessary to rebuild lives. I’ve heard first-hand some of their success stories which is why I’m so excited to be given the chance to contribute to their cause.
So I’m asking each of you to donate $50 – but you don’t have to actually give any money! All you have to do is leave a comment below telling me about a dish you’ve prepared using Johnsonville Italian Sausage and Johnsonville will give $50 directly to Homestretch.
If you haven’t tried one of their recipes but would like to donate, head on over to their site to get some inspiration. Then just come back and let me know which one you tried! I’ve also posted one of my favorites below – it’s delicious!
Thanks in advance to everyone who leaves a comment to help these families in need, and thanks to Johnsonville for being a company I’m proud to partner with.
Johnsonville Italian Sausage Sliders
- 2 lbs Johnsonville® All Natural Ground Sausage, or links, decased
- 1 lb Ground Beef
- 16 small Slider buns or mini sandwich rolls
Then add any of these delicious condiments:
- Provolone Cheese and Marinara Sauce
- Fresh Mozzarella, Fresh Basil, and Sliced Tomatoes
- Giardiniera – (marinated chopped vegetables & olives)
- Sautéed Onions & Roasted Red Peppers
- Sautéed Mushrooms and Cheddar Cheese
In a large bowl combine sausage and beef. Using your hands, blend the two meats together and form into one large ball. Use a spoon or a small measuring cup to gather
up about a 3 oz ball and press into patties.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, pan fry 4 or 5 sliders at a time. Cook for about 3 minutes then flip and continue cooking for another 3 minutes. Test for doneness,
internal temperature should be 160.
Slice the buns and top the sliders with your favorite condiments.
16 sliders, serves 6-8

you are so clever and these look just delicious!!!
My favorite is the Johnsonville Sweet Italian Sausage for pizza. But I like the hot sausage for breakfast burritoes too.
Thank you, Britt!

Thank you, Erika!
Thank you, Laurie!!
I never thought to use sausage in sliders — what a fantastic idea! In the past, I've crumbled up cooked sausage and added it to a stew.
Thanks, Darlene!
I like to grill Johnsonville Hot Italian Sausage, Then mix them with peppers and onions and eat them on a hard roll. Yum!
That's one of my faves, too. Thanks for the donation!
Sounds terrific!
I use Johnsonville hot Italian sausage in my grandmothers recipe for Danish style meatballs. I use one pound ground beef and one pound Johnsonville sausage. It's my son's favorite recipe.
Thanks, Kanna!
Good luck with the cause and it was terrific meeting you at IFBC this weekend. GREG
I haven't made anything because I'm vegetarian. But my boyfriend made some sort of frankenburger using Johnsonville sausage and regular hamburger meat, and said it was the best burger that he ever made! Also, that's great that Johnsonville Sausage will make a $50 donation per comment.
Sounds delicious, Marilyn! Thank you so much for the donation.
Great Cause! Love the Johnsonville Always make the spicy sausage pasta alfredo, in fact it is on the weekly menu this week!
Oh….that sounds YUM. Thanks for commenting, FI :-)

Thanks, Greg! It was terrific meeting you as well. Always great to put a face with a name and you were just as wonderful as I'd anticipated. Hope to see you again soon!
I make meatballs using a mixture of ground beef and Johnsonville Italian Sausage. Roll in minced garlic & goat cheese and they get to be rather delicious. Highly recommend. Thank you for donating to a cause dedicated to ending homelessness
ummm…did you say "roll in minced garlic & goat cheese"?!! You had me at Italian Sausage but WOW, that sounds amazing. I literally have Johnsonville Italian Sausage in my fridge at this very moment and that's what's getting made with it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awwww…my Amy, I knew you'd support a good cause! Thanks much for the donation. All of your dishes sound delish but that lasagna needs to be in my belly today!! xoxo
Thanks so much, Ach!
Thanks for making my stomach rumble at 7am. I guess I'm gonna have to break out my Daddy Flippers – a small popper-style biscuit using croissant rolls, ground Johnsonville sausage, green peppers, tomatoes, black olives and fresh mozzarella. Wrap the ingredients into a square of dough, fold and brush with melted butter. Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown. Dip in A-1 (or sauce of your liking). Excellent cause and good luck in your fundraising efforts!
Thanks Dave. You're the most #procasual guy I know!
Anyone who happens to read this comment should know that Dave is doing his own fundraising efforts to fight prostate cancer. Information on his cause (and photos of the groovy mustache he's growing) can be found at:  http://www.hdhubby.com/” rel=”nofollow”>;http://www.hdhubby.com/
Peace out.
I remove the casing and use the hot sausage in my chili for extra kick. I also slice it and serve over pasta with marinara. I'll have to try the sliders–clever idea.

I use Johnsville Italian sausage for Red Sauce over Pasta!! It's the best with the spiciest version…at least for me. One of the family favorites. And you can tell if it's not Johnsonville….or from WI!! :-)
I use the spiciest version, too! And you can definitely tell when it's not Johnsonville. They're THE best! Thanks, Jolie…you're an awesome sister. xoxo

I love making meatloaf with the Johnsonville Sausage, it's a family favorite around here. One lbs hamberg to one lb sausage, and we switch out the sausage, depending on our mood!
these Sliders are superb! I will absolutely include the sauteed mushrooms and cheddar cheese on this recipe.
I use Johnsonville Italian Sausage with meatballs and mash. I cook it mainly for my kids and they love it!! :-)
