christmas brownies

As we get closer to Christmas, my cooking and baking (and therefore my life) is picking up speed and gets a bit crazier every day. As always when I’m in the kitchen, my girls want to help. I try to give them as many jobs as possible, but sometimes I just need to get things done and I find myself shooing them away. I try to make up for it by finding a fun kids project they can do all by themselves.
The girls made these Christmas Brownies entirely by themselves. At 5 and 7, they’re old enough to mix the ingredients (with a little measuring help), pour the batter into the pan and watch the brownies bake (I do all the oven work, of course). Once the brownies were cool I helped cut them into tree shapes, then the girls completely took over and handled all the decorations. I even made some round ones in mini-muffin tins that they decorated like ornaments. We added a candy cane for the “trunk” and voila! Christmas Brownies!

These are adorable! Love the tree shape and candy cane trunk. I never think of creative things like this!
Totally with you there Lisa…. I NEVER think of anything this creative either!
Very creative and delicious looking!
Oh how adorable!! I am a kindergarten teacher! I wish I thought of making little Christmas Tree shaped brownies for my kids!
They are TOTALLY cute! Wow!
While brownies are certainly not a complicated thing to make, they always taste great. It is cool to see how you are able to use cooking in the kitchen as a way to bond with your children as well. Kids love sweet things, and brownies are no different. Hopefully as they grow up they are able to associate the sweet sugary smell of brownies with being with their mom. I know that is kind of cheesey of me to say, but I'll be honest: my mom made (and continues to make) great brownies I still eat whenever we have a family get together.
Oh, and by the way, the Christmas spin you threw into the mix is a great way to bring some of the annual festivities to the foreground; while still making something very simple and tasty!
I wish I had these on christmas day! That would have been awesome!
