Fun June Food Facts

June is Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month!

  • The blue paint that Shakers used in their homes was made from blueberries.
  • Legend holds that raspberries were originally white. The legend states that the nymph Ida pricked her finger while picking berries for the infant Jupiter, and raspberries have since been red with her blood.
  • Medium to small strawberries tend to have more flavor than the larger sizes.
  • Asparagus was considered a luxury vegetable in ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece.
  • Cucumbers are about 95 percent water.
  • String beans are called that because most varieties used to have a long fibrous string that ran along the seam of the bean. The strings have been mostly bred out of commercial varieties of beans.
  • The flowers of the zucchini plant are also edible.

Father’s Day is June 21st!

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.  But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”   Mark Twain

Coming next week…cool and unique Father’s Day gifts for the chef and/or barbecue master!
