peanut butter and banana breakfast smoothie {guest recipe}
I love smoothies! So it was no wonder that I was excited when Jillena from Eat Well, Live Free sent me her favorite smoothie recipe to share with you.
The first moment I met Jillena I knew that she was filled with awesome. I was at IFBC (International Food Bloggers Conference, for which I was sponsored in exchange for creating this recipe) in Santa Monica. I started chatting with her the first day of the conference and it was just…fun. There were no introductions, it was just smiles and laughs as if we’d been friends forever. I love happy people; they bring out the happy in me, and who wouldn’t want that?
This smoothie is a bit different from your typical smoothie. It contains Uncle Sam cereal, which I’d never heard of. I asked Jillena about it, and this is what she said:
The website for the cereal is: http://www.attunefoods.com/. It is soo good. Only four ingredients: wheat, flaxseed, salt and barley malt. It is very filling and provides high fiber, offering intestinal health. Seniors and athletes are their biggest audiences. You can find it at most grocery stores including Trader Joe’s. I just got an email from a friend of mine who made the smoothie and she told me that her young daughter loved it!
I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but seeing as I’m making my monthly trip to Trader Joe’s with Andrea Meyers on Friday, I’m going to pick some up and come straight home to try it!
- 1/2 banana, frozen
- 1 c unsweetened vanilla soy milk
- 1 tbls fresh peanut butter
- 1/4 c Uncle Sam cereal
- cinnamon sprinkle to taste

This is a really great and simple recipe, just how I like them! I'm a pretty big fan of organic foods (not strictly in any sense, though), and Uncle Sam cereal sounds like it could really hit the spot; especially in this unique blend of cereal, peanut butter, and banana. And honestly, if it looks anything like it does in the picture; I'd imagine drinking this smoothie to be a real easy thing. Personally, I'd probably find myself throwing some chocolate syrup into the mix to make it a bit more sweet; though I'm not sure that is something you would advise everyone to do!
I think everyone needs a little chocolate syrup in their lives ;-)
Thanks Kristy for having me as a guest poster! I'm so glad everyone enjoyed this treat..I mean healthy breakfast! I absolutely encourage chocolate in all forms.

This looks so good and healthy!
I've always loved peanut butter with banana. I'm off to check out her blog!
OH, that looks GOOD!! Maybe it won't be so hard to stick to my diet after all!
Looks fantastic!
Looks delicious! Love the addition of cinnamon.
Oh, cinnamon is such a great addition to a smoothie like this! I agree; it's such a good idea! Cinnamon is also supposed to speed up metabolism :-)
Mmmmm! What a great classic combo. :)

Hey, love the idea of this kind breakfast. My son is allergic to all nuts, but we have substituted sunflower butter for things with peanut butter in them. It has worked great. I am going to try it with this recipe.
Actually, my son doesn't like the taste of any seed or nut flavor because he never has had peanut butter in his life and the idea and smell of it makes him really nervous, but I can make some thing like this, enjoy it, and not worry about getting my son exposed to allergens.
Thanks.

How does sunflower butter taste? I've never heard of it before. I have only tried things like apple butter, almond butter, and peanut butter. My 2 kids are also allergic to nuts, unfortunately, but I love peanut butter.
I too am curious about the taste of sunflower butter. I guess that since it IS a seed, it SHOULD taste good. I have never seen this in stores before but as my son has a nut allergy, I would love to be able to try this.
I'm so glad you all like this! Thanks to Kristy for posting! I adore sunflower butter. I have always been able to buy this at my local Trader Joe's as well. Butters are similar in texture enough to interchange in most recipes yet offer their own flavors. Yum!!

This type of breakfast is perfect! I love drinking a smoothie on the way to work because I don't have time to make breakfast, let alone sit down and eat it. A smoothie on the run is fast, easy, and whenever I have a good one with peanut butter and banana… I feel full at least until lunch :)
Hmm… I've never heard of Uncle Sam cereal before. Probably since I am Canadian :-). I could probably just substitute it with something similar though. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Banana and peanut butter is my all-time favorite combination of flavors! What a fantastic recipe for a smoothie! I can't wait to try it :)
Oh you can get that cereal at Trader Joes?! That's awesome! My boyfriend shops there all the time. I don't have a Trader Joes anywhere near me, but he'll love this recipe. I'll pass it on to him!
I love peanut butter and banana together (and espresso in that mix as well, but that's another story), so this is immediately appealing! Using the cereal to thicken is a great idea. I need to try this!

Smoothies always bring me back to old times and my child hood. I loved having smoothies after a long day “playing” or “working”.
