Air Fryer Pigs In A Blanket Substitutions & Tips
- Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket with Cheese: Add your favorite cheese. I have used cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella, cream cheese, Velveeta and Pepper Jack. Cut a cheese strip, and use one half to tuck in next to the hot dog as you wrap it in dough. Make sure the dough covers up the cheese to prevent a mess.
- Dippers: Dip these in your favorite sauce including ketchup, mustard, cheese sauce, buffalo wing sauce, BBQ sauce, maple syrup (with breakfast sausage) and more.
- Sausage: You can use any pre-cooked sausage that you prefer including Vienna sausage. Lit’l Smokies also makes a beef or turkey sausage. If you use anything other than a mini sausage simply cut sausage down to a mini size or follow the full sized hot dog instructions. You can do the same with a regular sized hot dog as well.
- Hot Dog: A regular sized hot dog works and for larger dogs you can always use more than one crescent roll on a hot dog or leave the hot dog ends exposed with one crescent roll.
- Hot Dog Varieties: The list of hot dog flavors you can use is endless including cheese dogs, beef, angus, steak, wagyu, pork turkey, chicken, vegan, smoked, jumbo, bun length, kosher, halal and more.
- Spicy Pigs in a Blanket: Add some heat with a hot pepper of your choice.
- Bacon Pigs in a Blanket: Change things up and wrap them in cooked bacon. Thin, not too crispy bacon wraps best.
- Butter: After baking, brush the pigs in a blanket with butter.
- Toppings: Poppy or sesame seeds are a nice addition, or try Everything Bagel seasoning. Apply butter before seasoning.
- Use these air fryer parchment sheet liners or reusable air fryer silicone liner mats. The holes allow for hot air to circulate and cook the food evenly.
Make Ahead
Crescent roll pigs in the blanket can be made two ways but keep in mind that opening the can of dough activates the leavening that causes it to rise.
Refrigerate Ahead: Crescent dogs can be made ahead and stored in the fridge up to several hours before. Simply assemble the pigs in a blanket, place on parchment paper and cover in plastic wrap. When ready to serve air fry according to the instructions.
Freeze Ahead: Assemble and air fry the pigs in a blanket according to instructions. Allow them to cool 10 minutes, place in a single layer in a sealed Ziploc freezer bag and freeze up to 1 month. To Reheat, place the frozen pigs in a blanket on parchment paper in the air fryer at 300°F and heat for 2-3 minutes or until heated through.
