Hawaiian Roll Ham Sliders

Looking for an easy appetizer? These Hawaiian roll ham sliders are loaded with ham, two types of cheese, and finished with garlicky herb butter.

These Hawaiian roll sliders with garlic butter have me hooked. The balance of sweet and savory is so addictive. The top of each slider is lightly crispy, while the inside is warm and fluffy. As you make your way further, the sweetness of the rolls comes through, the smokiness of the ham follows, then melted cheese, and the herby garlic flavor of the butter ties everything together.

Hawaiian Roll Ham Sliders Ingredients Notes

To make Hawaiian roll ham sliders, you’ll need the following:

  • Hawaiian sweet rolls: Pick up a 12-count package from the grocery store. They are easy to find and inexpensive. If you have the time, you can even bake the rolls from scratch. King’s Hawaiian rolls or your favorite brand will work.
  • Deli ham: Use high-quality deli ham that you enjoy eating. Something smoky works best because smoked deli ham tends to have a nice balance of sweetness and depth that doesn’t mask all the delicious pork flavor ham offers. The thinner the slices, the better.
  • Cheese: This version uses a combination of smoked provolone and cheddar cheese. Smoked provolone has a smoky, earthy flavor that compliments the sweetness of the ham quite well. It is an excellent melting cheese, and cheddar cheese brings a classic element to this batch of ham sandwiches.
  • Garlic Butter: A combination of butter, garlic, and herbs is poured over the sandwiches before they go into the oven. The added fat infuses each Hawaiian roll slider with flavor and promotes browning.

How to Make Hawaiian Roll Ham Sliders

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Assemble the sliders: Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping them connected. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the baking pan. Top with half of the ham, add the cheese, then add another layer of ham.
  3. Make the herby garlic butter: Melt the butter in a small saucepan, add the garlic, toss in the herbs, and it’s ready in no time!
  4. Pour on the butter: You want to pour the butter over the sandwiches instead of brushing the butter on so it soaks into the bread.
  5. Bake: Cover the pan with foil and place into the oven to bake until the cheese melts, then cook uncovered for a final few minutes to develop golden brown tops.
  6. Serve: Cut the sliders into individual servings and enjoy warm.

Variations, Substitutions, and Cooking Tips

Customize the sauce – Add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper if you prefer spicier Hawaiian roll ham sliders. Other options include mustard for a bit of zip or playing up the sweetness of ham with honey or brown sugar for a sweet buttery sauce.

Try different types of cheese – You can’t go wrong with Swiss, all cheddar, or whatever melting cheese you like.

Add toppings – Poppy or sesame seeds will add texture.

What Are Hawaiian Sweet Rolls?

Hawaiian sweet rolls are fluffy dinner rolls made with flour, sugar, butter, yeast, eggs, and sometimes pineapple juice. It is inspired by Portuguese bread called pao doce. Like the rolls, pao doce is made with an enriched dough that requires a fair amount of rise time to achieve an airy texture. King’s Hawaiian rolls are the most well known brand but many brands make these rolls.

Storage and Freezer Tips

Store Hawaiian roll ham sliders in an airtight container and refrigerate. Alternatively, you can keep the sandwiches in the pan you baked them in and tightly cover the pan with foil. I do not recommend freezing. This recipe requires minimal cooking, so freezing isn’t necessary, plus the cold temperature will alter the texture.

How to Reheat

Hawaiian roll sliders can be reheated in the microwave in 15-second intervals or until the cheese melts. If you have more time, reheat them in the oven. If using the oven, set it to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, then reheat for 7-10 minutes or until warm. You can pop them on a baking sheet to reheat or reheat them in the pan they were cooked in.
