Kirkland Split Pea and Ham Soup Ingredients

This is a quick overview of the main ingredients you’ll need for this split pea and ham soup recipe.

  • Dried green split peas: Dried split peas can typically be found near dried beans in the grocery store. This recipe is for green split peas but feel free to use yellow.
  • Olive oil: To sauté the vegetables.
  • Onion, carrots, celery & garlic: A classic mirepoix to form the flavor base.
  • Ham bone with leftover meat: A good old leftover ham bone is a wonderful base for split pea soup. Many grocery store meat departments and butchers sell smoked ham hocks if you don’t have a ham bone.
  • Cubed ham (or remaining leftovers): Chunks of leftover ham, a ham steak, or pre-packaged cubed ham will all work.
  • Salt & ground black pepper: I recommend kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper. The recipe calls to season when adding the ham but I would wait and season to taste at the end.

Split Pea and Ham Soup Tips & Variations

  • A smoked ham hock is saltier than a leftover ham bone so you many want to add less salt.
  • Add the salt and pepper last and season to taste.
  • Start with a little less water than the recipe suggests and add more water, if needed. It is easier to thin this soup than to make it thicker. This soup will thicken as it cools.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, sour cream, croutons, parmesan cheese, bacon, pancetta or prosciutto.
  • You can save a leftover ham bone and freeze for up to 2 months before making this recipe.
  • Add about 1 cup of unpeeled, diced yellow or red potatoes with about 30 minutes left of simmering.
