Fresh or canned mangos can be used in place of frozen mango but you may need more ice or try freezing the mango prior. Pineapple would also be delicious substitute.

Mango Margarita Recipe Tips
- Salt the Rim: Add margarita salt or sea salt to the rim of your glass, if you prefer. Tajin or a any chili salt is great too especially when it’s a spicy mango margarita.
- Rim the Cocktail Glass with Lime: Before adding the salt rim the glass with lime first.
- Make Mocktails: Switch the tequila and Grand Marnier in equal portions with water and orange juice for a virgin Mango Margarita.
- Don’t Overdo the Ice: The frozen mango reduces the need for a lot of ice. Add a small quantity of ice, adding more until the texture is right.
- Don’t Overblend: Over-blending can turn the margarita into juice
- Keep the Margaritas Slushy: Chill the glasses and the blender pitcher before preparing the drinks.
Make it a Spicy Mango Margarita
Simply adding jalapeño as a garnish alone will not give this drink heat that is needed to make it spicy. If you prefer your margarita hot, then you’ll need to add the jalapeño before blending. Here are several ways to do this.
Different Ways to Make it Spicy
- Blend the jalapeño slices and then add rest of ingredients to the blender.
- Muddle the jalapeños and add to blender with all ingredients.
- Use jalapeño simple syrup.
Make it a Mango Margarita on the Rocks
If you prefer a mango margarita on the rocks, substitute the frozen mango with 3/4 cup mango juice and stir and shake instead of blending.
Best Tequila for Margaritas
Tequila Blanco also known as Silver is the perfect tequila for a margarita. Tequila Reposado and Tequila Añejo are great tequilas for sipping or on the rocks but generally too pricey to be used in a margarita, where the taste difference is diminished by all the ingredients.
Grand Marnier Substitute
This recipe calls for Grand Marnier which is an orange liqueur. The orange liqueur balances out the lime juice with its sweetness and of course, add notes of orange to the mango margarita. There are also hints of vanilla and oak in Grand Marnier.
Did you know adding a shot of Grand Marnier to any margarita makes it a “Cadillac Margarita.”
Grand Marnier Substitute
If you don’t have Grand Marnier, any orange flavored liqueur will work. Of course, this may slightly change the flavor but will work just fine.
- Triple Sec
- Cointreau
- Orange Curaçao
Alcohol Free Substitute
These substitutes will work in a pinch and are more affordable options to the higher priced orange liqueurs.
- Orange Extract
- Orange Juice
- Orange Concentrate
